Off Season Fan View (1/3)

Hi Ramily…

Well Rams fans, it’s that time of year again where after the ‘NFL Draft’ we have this lull, where not a lot happens and we get the odd bit of news out of training camp. So, over the next few months, I am going to take this opportunity to do a couple of articles about what’s been happening during this offseason to our team…. stuff like coaching changes, free agency, trades and the draft. This will again be all wrapped up in my ‘two cents’ and my ‘hopes’ for the coming season.

First up: Coaching changes

This offseason did see two big changes; first, we lost Matt LaFleur, our offensive coordinator who moved on to do the same job at the Tennessee Titans. We also lost Greg Olson, our quarterback’s coach who moved on and stepped up to be the offensive coordinator and play caller with the Oakland Raiders. This was two blows for our ‘up and coming’ offence and I was sorry to see them both move on. I felt they were both instrumental in turning around our offence last year and also in helping Jared Gofff take a big step forward. Anyway like me, I’m sure you would like to wish them both ‘good luck’ in their new posts.

Coming in to take the place of Matt LaFleur, head coach McVay brought in former UCLA Football offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch to take up the role of senior offensive assistant. This is not his first time in the NFL and his last stint with a pro team was with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013-2014 as their offensive coordinator. This is an interesting one as Coach McVay calls the offensive plays, so Fisch won’t be a coordinator as such, but he does bring a wealth of knowledge to the post and experience in this area.

Replacing Greg Olson, coach McVay chose to find our new quarterback coach internally and promoted our assistant wide receivers coach Zac Tayler. Entering his second year with the Los Angeles Rams this is another guy with a ton of offensive experience. Tayler was formally the offence coordinator for the Miami Dolphins from 2012-2015. Before joining the Rams he was the offensive coordinator for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. An interesting fact about Tayler is that when he was with the Dolphins he helped Ryan Tannehill throw for 3000 or more yards in each of his first four seasons. He is the only quarterback in Dolphins history to achieve this.
